Alaska Packrafting
An Introduction on Getting Deeper and Going Farther!
Written by guest author Luke Moffat
Despite the vast size of Alaska, we all know that the relatively small road system can translate into limited access to the rest of the state without some alternate mode of transportation. Be it boats, airplanes, snowmachines, or ATVs, there are many methods of transport that Alaskans use to access the different areas of the state that are off the roadways. Another means of transportation option I have been using the past few years to access areas of our state further off the road system is a packraft.

Thanks for sharing this information with us enjoyed every bit of it :)
I have huge respect for the outdoor of alaska. I hope to visit alaska next year.
The tired trip but I swear you won’t have a chance to get that experience for the second! The first time is always the best :D
If imperial units are a problem to understand and/or convert, we can try to add metric to the postings as well from time to time.
These boats can range in price from around $600 up to just past $2,000 depending on size, materials of construction, features, etc.
Did i miss approximate cost of these vessels somewhere in your write-up?
it would be great if you could use non-retard units, in brackets, for those who live in other parts of world :)
Well, it’s something I have definitely got to try out!
Thanks for the info.
I’m doubting they track as straight, but these are definitely purpose built to be very lightweight and also hold a ton of weight (respective to their diminutive size). These are popular with backpackers and back-country hunters for sure!
That’s a great write-up.
The packrafts look to be quite a bit lighter than inflatable kayaks. Very handy if you need to walk any great distances to get to the water, especially if you have fishing tackle to take as well!
What about when it comes to getting around on the water? Do they track as well as an inflatable kayak?
Hey Braden! I’d get in touch with Larry Bartlett with pristineventures.com
He has developed some of the best packrafts for backcountry use in Alaska and could provide a plethora of information regarding your trip. I hope that helps! —Kyle
Hey folks. I’m about to embark on a packraft trip with my brothers in Alaska. We’re outdoorsman, but not experienced packrafters. We’re trying to decide on how we should prep. We’re looking for a recommendation for a company that could help us plan and map our trip. We don’t think we want a guided trip, but we do want to find a proffesional to consult with. Ya’ll know of any kind of organization that provides such a service?
Looks like a great way to get out into the backwoods!
Nice article Kyle. As you have experienced, packrafts are a great backcountry tool for hunters and fisherman or for anyone wanting to save space or shave some weight. Northern Alaska Packrafts rents and sells new packrafts right from our shop in Fairbanks. We are the only Alpacka Raft dealer in northern AK. Check us out here: http://www.alaskapackrafts.com/ - All of our 2012 boats are 10% off.
I tell you what Kyle; you figure out a way to pick up a few…and well use them when I make it up there again. Sound good?! I think so…! LOL.
@LukeJohnson No doubt, Luke! I’ve already got a new Kifaru pack to purchase next year!
This is awesome! But….now you gave me something else that I have to save up for…thanks a lot! LOL.
